Hi, I'm Ruby on Rails...
by Jason on May 14, 2007
What do you get when you cross the Mac vs PC commercials and Rails Envy? Ruby on Rails ads to get everyone hyped for Railsconf, that's what!
Gregg Pollack and Jason Seifer from RailsEnvy present:
Ruby on Rails vs Java -- ad #1 of 4
We'll be releasing one every day leading up to RailsConf. Feel free to place this video in other places by using YouTube's flash snippet.
Masterfully edited and filmed by Jason Hawkins over at Make. Film. Work. Definitely get in touch with him if you need any video work done of any kind.

LOL… That was awesome. Good editing to by Jason.
Seriously, how did you guys decide who gets to be “Ruby On Rails” ??
Funny.
(snort) muaHAHAHAHAAAAA! Great stuff guys!
Excellent!
That is funnier than hell! I can’t wait to see the others.
Brilliant! I want more…
Great job guys, I was looking forward to seeing these after you told me about them and this does not disappoint. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the others. Audio sounds clear, video looks great, script is solidly funny, good call on casting too. :)
It looks like Adam Keys has a competitor!

hehee good show
Exsellent I love it :), can’t wait for the next one
Kudos to you guys. That’s freakin’ brilliant!
So cool! Can’t wait for the sequence! ;) Congrats!
Loved “Hibernate”.
Amazing! Can’t wait for the next ones… Good work!
Fantastic! Top work guys.
To make it look real you should have shown the Ruby guy’s gems. By the way Sun is a diamond sponsor of the RailsConf 2007. Because currently Java is a gateway to enterprise applications for RoR. It’s a huge market in amount of money going to be spent.
It’s fun…. the idea fits the size of two actors as well …
Just wonder how a movie to show who can carry 100kg load will be …
Haha, that’s exactly what I needed this morning! Great stuff guys.
Funny stuff! I wonder if one will involve .net ?
This is so cool and funny even if you are a Java developer :-D.
What is in the red jar..being a non tech guy I don’t get the joke..but I want to
On paper this had the potential to be all kinds of awful – but I was very pleasantly surprised. Nice job – made me chuckle (delivery of the line “what is this?!” was perfect) and I wait with baited breath for the next one :)
Funny 4 sure.
but ruby still aint ready for prime time, but it’s fine for non-enterprize sites.
cheers.
hahahahaha
Good work
Me and my collegues are literally dead. It is so-o true!
Please post a high res image of the “Hibernate” jar. Don’t know if I should laugh or feel sorry for the squezed bear :-)
Clever stuff guys. Lots of rails guys and gals are mac people and it seems it is as much a philosophy as anything else.
F….ing genious – and that’s coming from a 10 year Java developer – LOL :-)
That was pretty darn funny. You should do more. Many, many more.
Language/Editor/Framework/OS fanboys puzzle me. Why promote a particular technology to the world? Aren’t you preaching to the choir? Go promote it to your boss, you could actually do some good there.
You should make one where the Rails guy moves real slow and talks real slow because he can’t scale.
“Hi…....................................I’m…............................................Twitter…..................”
Beautifully done! Love the music. The amateur actors are even somewhat convincing in their “performances.”
Rock on.
Brian
Jeff, given that this RailsEnvy a blog and not a company, I can see your point. We’re not Ruby on Rails fanatics here, we just enjoy using it because it’s fun. There are many solutions to specific problems, some better then others. Rails doesn’t solve them all.
We put these videos together to be funny, and illustrate some of the reasons we love it. If you’re looking for a educated dictation on why one language/framework is better then the other, then this is not the place to look. ;-)
Hahaha! You should make this into a series! It was awesome!
whats in the red jar? jruby?
Just brilliant and perfect timing given the mind numbing problems I have had today with ‘Classpaths’....
Very cute guys! I’ve never written a line of Java or Ruby, but still appreciate an efficient development process.
Keep up the great work, and don’t get too high sniffing the Red Jar’s contents! :-)
The Red Jar… was just supposed to represent something odd and perhaps a little gross. Didn’t have one thing in mind. Those that said it’s JRuby were clever.
In reality the Red Jar had garlic cloves, banana peppers, and a pickle in a mixture of sprite and cranberry juice. Deeelicious!
The red jar was obviously supposed to contain the kool-aid.
THE RED JAR- Could you provide the recipe? I am always up to try anything “different”, which people say is deeelicious. I even tried Vegimite and Natto once.
Brilliant. The red jar was a great touch!
The red jar contains what’s needed for the app to scale.
Rails looks nervous and unstable. Java looks like a closet sadist.
Very appropriate.
Well done guys!
Hope Mac doesn’t sue you guys. I enjoyed the clip. coz I am not a programmer can someone tell me what is the red liquid.
Side comment: I saw your recent post on RMagick compilation pain. (Trying to leave a comment there didn’t work, though.) I haven’t made progress for a while, but what’s done of my RMagick4J project (http://code.google.com/p/rmagick4j/) works out of the box on JRuby on Mac, Windows, or Linux. On 32 or 64 bits. Java and jars have their advantages too (especially compared to .so, .dll, and friends). Still, very funny ad, and your point is well made.
